The Dunedin Chinese Presbyterian Church has a rich history, it was established in 1897 and is the oldest Chinese church in New Zealand. Due to the discovery of gold in Central Otago in the 19th century, many Chinese came to Central Otago during the gold rush. The Presbyterian Church of New Zealand at the time saw the need for the gospel to be brought to the Chinese in Otago so they hired a young missionary called Alexander Don. For the sake of evangelising the Chinese in Otago, this young European missionary went to Guangdong province in China to learn Cantonese before returning to New Zealand to evangelise the Chinese here for over thirty years. As the goldmines in Central Otago depleted, many Chinese returned to China, but some remained in Dunedin. Hence, in 1897 Rev. Alexander Don established the Chinese Mission Church in Dunedin for the Chinese in Dunedin.

The original location of the Mission Church was in South Dunedin on Walker Street (now called Carroll Street), it was moved to the current location on Howe Street in 1993. The name was later changed to Dunedin Chinese Presbyterian Church. The development of the church over the past one hundred years had been rough, one reason was because it was difficult to find a Chinese pastor who was willing to serve here long-term, and partly due to this reason, the numbers often dwindled. However, thanks to God’s amazing protection, the church survived to this day. In 1999 Reverend Peter Liu and his wife Rosemary Su was called by God to serve in this church, with their arrival, the church developed rapidly, not only in numbers but also in faith. Reverend Liu and his wife faithfully pastored the church for nearly twenty years, when they retired in 2018, they passed the baton to Pastor Daniel Sun and his wife Pastor ChinHung Ng. Pastor Sun and his family is serving God faithfully and is continuing the mission that began over a hundred years ago. “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” (1 Corinthians 3:6-7) Written by Jenny.
